Aliens : Prequel
We are 4 billion year old planet with zillions of species living on it. Several times Earth has been obliterated and almost sterilised, but some how Earth has remained habitable over a period of time. As of now Earth is being dominated by Humans and will remain so for long time to come, until we have some nasty global event that can wipe out everything before we could even react. Unlike previous extinction events we have satellites monitoring ourselves and cosmos to warn us of coming catastrophe, being said that we have still have nasty visitors in the form of asteroid or meteorite which just shows up all of a sudden. As of now We have no means of avoiding anything bound towards us, We can just observe and estimate when it can slam us and what might be level of extinction.
Even if we build spacecrafts and evacuate some of us out of Earth, We have no place to go other than crash land somewhere after we run out of fuel. As space faring species We are doing baby steps of exploring immediate neighborhood, among several countries only very few of them have the wherewithal to afford space exploration. Most the countries are either fighting with themselves or others.
Space exploration is expensive and time consuming. We have lots of people who are starving and pretty bad shape to even think of space exploration. We consider space exploration isn't a priority and until unless all nations come forward and contribute for the cause of exploration We would end up just observing rather than going there and doing that.
Observing an distant planet or star is an space archaeology where we are actually observing something which has already happened depending how far the planet is, it would take that many light years before we get to know what happened then. if we were to observe a planet teeming with lifeforms We have no way to reach them then and their. If at all we send a probe or drone and by miracle it reaches to planet we may not see same condition of planet which we observed back then. Even when drone reaches there and sends the visuals of the current conditions by the time we receive the data it would be several thousand years. By then We humans would have certainly non existent either by nature or war.
Imagine there is an space faring species out there somewhere who might have resolved all those bickering and not ending up blowing themselves up. Probably they would have figured out issue of traveling at speed more than light can travel, but they have huge expanse of universe to explore.
Anything and everything is drifting apart, as we speak milkyway is on collision course with Andromeda while we are drifting away from other galaxies.
Radio and TV signals leaked out of planets atmosphere wouldnt have crossed solar system so ET has no way of sniffing our presence, until unless they end up here by accident or happen to discover us as they refuel themselves using Sun's energy. If ET has observed us by some sort of telescope, observed data would be radically different than what they might see when they send out a drone.
As we humans explored the solar system, we general send out striped down drone to observe. If there is anything interesting is found, we send out more sophisticated drones to observe deeper. Like wise ET would do the same by sending drones to observe us from safe distance. As most of observations done by humans are based on light reflections, drones sent by ET would be so small they would be no light reflections. Drones may also be designed to be stealth with certain cloaking features implemented. It is possible there could be multiple drones from multiple ET in and around solar system observing us and try to sabotage our space launches.
It would be a while before they decide to send out spaceship with occupants to do certain mission. It would be not just single spaceship, it could be armada of space ships. After observing us for several hundred years, they would have ascertained our strengths and weakness. As we humans plan for war and try give opponent strategic surprise, ET would also be doing the same so we don't sniff them out first.
